Geoffrey Claydon CB

Geoffrey has been a Director of the Heritage Railway Association since 2003, Chairman of the Legal & Parliamentary Affairs Committee since 2002, Chairman of the Heritage Tramways Committee since 2008 and a member of the Rail Cableways Committee.

Born in Birmingham, he holds a law degree and was admitted a Solicitor of the Supreme Court in 1954. From 1959 until 1995 he was a member of the Government Legal Service, serving as Principal Assistant Treasury Solicitor and Legal Adviser to the Department of Energy 1980-90 (when he was responsible for introducing a safety regime for personnel on offshore oil rigs) and at the Department of Transport 1990-95 (when he was responsible for up-dating railway and tramway legislation).

He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1990. He is a member of the Fixed Track Section of the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK and of the Tramway Standards Verification Group of HM Railway Inspectorate.

Currently Patron of the Light Rail Transit Association and a former President of the National Tramway Museum, he was contributing editor to Halsbury's Laws of England on Tramways (2000) and editor of British Tramway Accidents (2006).
