Recognising excellence and innovation in almost every aspect of heritage railway and tramway restoration, preservation and operation, recent winners have ranged from the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways brand new 'Double Fairlie' steam locomotive James Spooner to the Llangollen Railway's Corwen extension project … plus there’s been gongs for the Volks Electric Railway, volunteer success at Peak Rail, railcar restoration on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, engineering innovation at Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway, and digital marketing at the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

This year there are some exciting new categories including 'Achievement of the Year' and the return of 'Station of the Year' after an absence of many years. The top ‘Railway of the Year’ title is back alongside other well-known categories like the Morgan Award for Rolling Stock Preservation and the Lord Faulkner Young Volunteers Award.

Updated for the 2025 awards are the HRA awards for steam locomotives and heritage rail innovations. Other categories returning for 2025 include awards for ‘Infrastructure’, ‘Team of the Year’, ‘Diesel and Electric Locomotion’, ‘Rising Stars’ and ‘Marketing and Communications.’

Winners will be announced at the 2025 HRA Awards Evening at the Hilton NewcastleGateshead on Saturday, 8 February with guest speakers, networking opportunities and a gala dinner, with drinks reception.
