Technical support
The Heritage Railway Association is the leading authority on technical matters relating to building, operating and maintaining historic railways and tramways in the UK.
Bringing together expertise and experience from every part of the heritage rail sector, the HRA researches and publishes guidance on a huge array of issues affecting the sector. We champion best practice in every part of heritage rail, with a particular focus on engineering and safety.
We’re also rapidly developing updated guidance on environmental issues specific to the operation of heritage locomotives and the conservation of the areas through which railways operate.
Our guidance notes on subjects like boiler maintenance, track standards and operations are authored by experts in their field and are widely acknowledged as being pivotal to the future success of heritage rail. From managing competence, to the details of safely maintaining a cable hauled railway the HRA can provide valuable insight.
